The most challenging thing about decluttering is admitting that I’m not that actually the type of person who uses those things.
I’ve spent so much money on aspirational hobbies over the years and it all just piles up.
From a personal identity perspective, it’s hard to let go of the idea that I’m not going to hack with electronics, or use art canvases for oil painting, or take pictures with a fancy camera.
But in getting rid of all that crap, I’m not only creating more clarity around what does matter to me — playing bass, making stained glass, going to see live music — I’m also reducing the unconscious burden of how I’ve somehow failed myself by not achieving these other things I thought I would do.
It’s no different with a side hustle or a startup. Make sure that it is something that you naturally work on. Make sure that it’s something that brings you energy.
If not, it might be time to let it go so you can focus on the things that matter most to you.
