People compare starting companies to "getting repeatedly punched in the face" and "chewing glass." Fun! But... I've learned how to manufacture resiliency when times get tough.
As I've posted many times, I have seven very specific core Values in my life:
* Excellence (doing something that matters exceptionally well)
* Fatherhood (being a good father)
* Intimacy (being a good husband)
* Connection (time well spent with other humans)
* Music (listening to or making it)
* Creativity (creating wonderful things from scratch)
* Strength (exercising to the point of exhaustion)
And it's not just enough to name them. I can tell you:
* What activities I regularly do to connect with my Values
* What separates a transcendent experience from an average one (and how I can optimize for the former)
* When I have scheduled time in my calendar to make it happen.
So, what does this have to do with being resilient when getting punched in the face?
Sometimes coaching sucks. Sometimes I do stupid things and make my job harder than it needs to be. Sometimes my clients act dumb. It's true! And in those moments, I sometimes ask myself "should I be a coach?"
Then I remember, I have 30+ conversations with founders and friends every week. Most times both on the same call. And that's 30+ times a week that I have the opportunity to connect with two Values that matter the most to me. Why the hell would I do anything else?
Connecting my work to my Values gives me near infinite resources to power through hard times. And the same applies to rough times with my kids, my wife, and life in general.
I want to teach you this same skill.
I'm running a 90-minute class in Denver on October 30th at 4p to walk you through the process of discovering and living your core Values so you can develop this same resilience in your work and life. Link is in the comments.
Remember, you don't lose faith the moment you face your first objection (or even your fiftieth). It happens when you start to question whether what you're doing even matters. Have an answer ready.
♻️ Friends and random connections, Values coaching is one of the most important things in my life. If you've read this far down, please like/comment/share so this post gets more visibility. I'm not above begging when something really matters to me 😆
